Description

About the place:

Everybody is familiar with the USA’s Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. But did you know that there is a hidden Grand Canyon in India as well? There is, and it is nothing less thanbreathtaking. It’s true  in the Southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, there is a small village in the Kadapa district named Gandikota, and it is home to India’s Hidden Grand Canyon. Carved by the PennaRiver that snakes its way through the Erramala Ranges in Andhra Pradesh, experts believe the canyon is more than a thousand years old. The best part is that the untouched and unexploited natural beauty blends seamlessly with the area’s rich historical past

Gandikota, also known as Grand Canyon of India is a fort built in 12th century with red granite stones. The fort is protected by a deep gorge on one side, several hundred meters long and deep, with gigantic boulders scattered all around. Camping under the stars here would be a memorable night..! There are two ancient temples and a masjid in this fort which are in ruins due to lack of preservation.
Belum Caves, is the largest and longest cave system open to public in the Indian subcontinent. The govenment has built pathways, provided illumination and sank ventilation shafts to make the caves accessable. After the discovery of these caves back in 1983, it came to light that Buddhist and Jain monks were inhabited at this place. There is a underground stream that forms a natural waterfall at 150 feet deep from the ground level.
Lepakshi is a famous temple located in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. It is popular for the architecture built by talented sculptors in 16th century. A 6 foot giant Nandi sculpture is a unique feature in this place. The construction is made in the style of Vijayanagara with beautiful stone cravings all around
